On Thursday, December 12th, UP for Learning co-hosted the Vision for Vermont Youth Success Action Symposium with the Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD) to support action planning around the Vision for Vermont Youth Success Report’s Recommendations. Over 70 youth and adults representing key sectors and fifty-five organizations from around Vermont came together for an immersive day of discourse around the report. UP for Learning’s Youth Program Specialist (YPS) co-facilitation team was tasked with co-creating a brave space for all participants of all ages to feel open to sharing. After some opening remarks and grounding, UP’s YPS team led a “music mingle” welcome activity that prompted participants to interact with one another and forge new connections. Then, VCRD and UP staff, including each of our 4 youth program specialists, led circle groups discussing the six themes of the report with goal of identifying which of the action recommendations from each theme felt most resonant. Ultimately, the group was able to take a comprehensive, 36-page report and identify 5 key areas for action:
- Increase access to mental health providers in schools
- Increase genuine and diverse youth voice in community and school leadership bodies
- Fund, expand, and support the community schools model in Vermont
- Maintain a source of funding dedicated to youth voice and activities
- Improve transportation for access to youth spaces
Following the circles, the YPS led a 4-corner energizer activity to bring the group back together after a rejuvenating lunch. During the afternoon session, participants self-selected into five groups based on these priority actions, working together to identify relevant opportunities, barriers, and available resources to move the work forward. This collaborative effort generated dozens of resonant, actionable steps that can be taken to make meaningful strides towards success in these action areas. All in all, it was a powerful day of coalition-building that supported a shared vision and responsibility for youth success throughout Vermont. UP for Learning is grateful to VCRD and all who attended the symposium for their partnership, dedication, and enthusiasm for uplifting youth voice and agency in their work.
