UP's Youth Internship Program

UP for Learning’s Youth Internship Program is a dynamic group of elementary, middle, high school, and post-secondary youth, who co-design and co-facilitate UP for Learning’s projects. A core program at UP, the Youth Internship Program (YIP) ensures that, as an organization, UP lives its mission and vision.

UP for Learning supports educational systems and communities in fully engaging youth in reimagining and transforming education. UP has always included youth as leaders in all its projects and compensated them for their time. As the number of youth working with the organization increased, it became clear that we needed to create clearer structures for youth to grow.

What is the Opportunity?

This program is designed to be a full expression of youth-adult partnership. The YIP offers increased responsibilities and opportunities for youth looking to build facilitation, leadership, and communication skills. In collaboration with youth and adult staff, the YIP offers mentorship and workplace skills development.

Youth in the program receive mentorship from the UP staff and each other. Youth staff engage in goal setting with a Program Associate. All youth communicate regularly with staff about their availability, interest, and needs. They take a leadership role in their schools and on projects beyond their communities and represent UP at conferences and in partnerships.

What is the impact?

Youth surveyed agree UP’s Youth Internship Program offers:

  • Real-world skills that translate to college, work, and life
  • Equitable partnerships between youth and adults rooted in mutual respect
  • Leadership capacity that empowers youth to create change today

Youth Interns data shows:

  • 26% increase in those who feel responsible for making their school better
  • 12% increase in those who can have conversations with adults about how to make our school better
  • 11% increase in those who can have conversations with youth about how to make our school better
  • 13% increase in those who know how to use data to advocate for change
“The experience of leading and planning retreats has taught me so much about relationships, communication, leadership, and collaboration. I had to learn when to step up and when to step back to create an equitable voice among my co-facilitators which is a huge part of working with other people.”

What are people saying about UP?

I’m a lot more confident now because of it. And there are other factors that play into that confidence. But I think it sort of stemmed from being a part of that group. I had never had anything like that before in my life really.
— Former YATST Student
This group, YATST, can make a big change. And if you stay with it, it can make a change in you!
— Student Reflection
I used to be more of a strong leader, telling people what to do. Now that I’ve learned to facilitate, I help other people to work together.
