Youth-Adult Partnership and Arts Integration: Flynn and UP for Learning

April 28 @ 8:00 am - May 15 @ 5:00 pm

The Flynn Center for the Performing Arts and UP for Learning are excited to announce a new partnership to enhance the power of arts integration at your school.  Teams comprised of youth (6-8) and adults (2-4) will have a backstage pass to experience how the arts can transform the educational experience for students and teachers at your school.

  • April 28* – Launch with Tour of the Flynn
Go behind the curtain and explore Vermont’s vibrant and historic arts organization. Through a tour and interaction with Flynn and UP staff, your youth-adult team will learn how discovery, joy, and artistry are at the center of the performing arts experience, and the many ways in which you can engage with the Flynn to build deep and meaningful connection to school and community life.  This half-day experience will also provide teams with an exploration of youth-adult partnership and the transformative power of arts integration.

  • May 4, May 5 – Lead Teacher Kick-Off (Flynn in Amy E. Tarrant gallery)
At our annual kick-off event, you’ll receive brochures, posters, and other materials for the 2020-2021 student matinee season. You’ll see videos and hear insider information about all of the shows coming next year to prepare you and your team to select the shows you want to see and best connect to your school’s curriculum. We’ll have some great prizes and delicious snacks for you, and all Kick-Off attendees will receive a FREE pair of tickets to a selected evening show in the Flynn’s 2020-2021 Season.

  • May 15 – Remixing the Humanities with Aysha Upchurch (Flynn Main Stage)
Attendees will explore how humanities curricula are a particularly potent avenue to redesign how teaching and learning can embrace and leverage diversity beyond a checklist mentality. With a particular focus on the arts – poetry, storytelling, movement, and more — they will be able to glean strategies that shake up the old, shift power, and reshape classrooms as places where rigor, equity, and joy can co-exist.

  • Fall 2020 – Building Excitement for the Arts and Action Planning
Work with your team, Flynn, and UP for Learning staff to design and implement a kick-off plan at your school! How will you build excitement for the coming school year? How will you integrate the performing arts into your curriculum? How can share with your peers the work you’ve been doing and how can they get involved?

UP for Learning helps educational institutions across the country fully engage students in their own learning and in school redesign. UP utilizes research-based models that reshape the student-teacher relationship to one of shared ownership and shared responsibility. UP offers strategies, tools, and ongoing coaching to ensure that learning is engaging for everyone and youth are fully empowered.

Flynn is Vermont’s premier home for diverse performing arts programming and education, collaborating with artists, organizations, schools and the community to encourage the creation, appreciation, and understanding of the arts. We seek to nurture a vibrant arts community, foster artistic excellence, and bring people together for powerful shared experiences that inspire a creative exchange of ideas.
